Sunita Williams is proud of her family heritage, and this is exemplified by the fact that she took a Slovenian flag, a samosa, and a Carnelian sausage into space. His nickname is “Sunny” in America and “Sonka” in Slovenia.

In education, Sunita Williams graduated from Needham High School in 1983. In 1987 he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Science from the United States Naval Academy, and in 1995 he completed a Master of Science degree in Engineering Management from the Florida Institute of Technology.

Career

Sunita Williams began her career in the US Navy, where she served as a pilot. During his time in the Navy, Williams gained flight experience on a variety of aircraft and completed several missions. His journey in the army is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and skill. This experience later proved to be the foundation for his journey to become an astronaut and he was hired by NASA.

After beginning his career at NASA, Williams completed astronaut training and participated in several international space missions. He flew to the International Space Station (ISS) for the first time in 2006 and spent several weeks in space. During this time he not only carried out his research work but also set a new record by running a marathon in space. His missions gave him worldwide recognition as an accomplished astronaut.

In his career, he also excelled in spacewalks. Williams made a total of seven spacewalks, lasting 50 hours and 40 minutes. During these spacewalks, they performed various scientific and technical tasks, such as maintenance and equipment changes. Her skill and bravery made her one of the few experienced spacewalkers in the world, and she became a role model for women in space.

Sunita Williams joined the US Navy in May 1987. After initial training, he was designated as a Basic Diving Officer. She then underwent Naval Aviation Training and became a Naval Aviator in July 1989. Williams received initial training on the H-46 Sea Knight helicopter and was later assigned to Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 8. Here he participated in various military operations in the Persian Gulf, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Red Sea, including Operation Desert Shield.

In 1992, Williams was deployed to Miami during Hurricane Andrew relief operations, where he commanded an H-46 helicopter unit. In 1993, she entered the Naval Test Pilot School and after success was assigned as a test pilot in various rotary wing aircraft, including the T-2, UH-1, SH-60, and CH-53, and helicopters such as the H-57.

In 1995, Williams returned to the Naval Test Pilot School as an instructor and safety officer. He was then assigned to the USS Saipan as an aircraft handler and assistant air boss. In June 1998, NASA selected Williams for the astronaut program. Williams completed more than 3,000 flight hours in his career in more than 30 different aircraft. He retired from the Navy in 2017.

Career at NASA

Sunita Williams began astronaut training at the Johnson Space Center in August 1998. In December 2006, she was flown to the International Space Station (ISS) with the space shuttle Discovery on the STS-116 mission, where she became part of the Expedition 14 crew. Later, with the replacement of the Russian crew members in April 2007, the mission became Expedition 15.

Missions of Expedition 14 and 15

On April 16, 2007, Sunita Williams became the first person to run a marathon in space while on the ISS. During the same mission, he donated his hair to an organization called Locks of Love, which was sent back to Earth by fellow astronaut John Higginbotham.

Williams completed three spacewalks during his first mission, during which he performed various critical tasks outside the space station. During a spacewalk, his camera unlocked and flew into space, to which Williams reacted quickly but was unable to retrieve the camera. By 2007, Williams had completed four spacewalks totaling 29 hours and 17 minutes, the longest spacewalk by a woman at the time.

In March 2007, Williams requested more spicy food. When they found the tube of wasabi, the wasabi expanded into space upon opening it due to the low pressure of space, which was difficult to control due to the weightlessness of space.

Return journey

On April 26, 2007, NASA announced that Williams would be returned to Earth on the Atlantis mission STS-117. In this mission, she set the record for the longest space flight by a woman, in which she stayed in space for a total of 192 days. Bad weather forced the shuttle to land at Edwards Air Force Base, California instead of Cape Canaveral, where Williams successfully returned to Earth on June 22, 2007.

Marathons in space and other feats

On April 16, 2007, Sunita Williams completed the first marathon in space. He was registered to participate in the Boston Marathon and completed the distance in 4 hours and 24 minutes. His teammates sent him oranges during the race to cheer him on. On Earth, Williams’ sister Dina Pandya and astronaut Karen Nyberg were also running the marathon, and mission control kept Williams informed of their progress.

Campaigns 32 and 33

On July 15, 2012, Sunita Williams was launched to the ISS by a Soyuz TMA-05M spacecraft from Baikonur Cosmodrome as part of Mission 32/33. On July 17, after a successful docking with the ISS, she entered to begin her four-month mission. In that mission, Williams served as commander of the ISS, the second woman to hold that honor. In September 2012, Williams competed in her first triathlon in space. They completed the race using the ISS’s treadmill, stationary bike, and Advanced Resistive Exercise Device (ARED). He completed the 0.8 km swim, 29 km bike, and 6.4 km run in space in about 1 hour, 48 minutes, and 33 seconds.

On November 19, 2012, Williams returned to Kazakhstan with teammates Yuri Malenchenko and Akihiko Hoshide. Due to some technical delay, his capsule landed near Arkalik, about 35 km from the scheduled landing point.

Commercial Crew Program

In July 2015, NASA named Sunita Williams one of the first US commercial spaceflight astronauts. After that announcement, Williams worked with Boeing and SpaceX and trained with other astronauts in their commercial crew vehicles. In August 2018, he was assigned to the first operational mission (Starliner-1) of the Boeing CST-100 Starliner. In 2022, NASA confirmed that Williams and Barry Wilmore would join the astronaut crew for the mission.

On June 5, 2024, Williams became the first woman to fly on a flight test of an orbital spacecraft. During this mission, she went into orbit as the pilot of the Boeing Starliner. On August 17, 2024, she was forced to spend some extra time on the ISS with fellow astronaut Barry Wilmore due to technical problems with the Boeing Starliner service module.

Statistics of time in space

Before this mission, Williams was not among the top 50 astronauts in terms of time spent in space. However, she entered the top 30 on 24 August 2024 due to additional time spent. She is expected to be among the top 12 astronauts on time when she returns in February 2025. In September 2024, Williams assumed command of the International Space Station (ISS), his second career command. She will hold the post till February 2025.

Space Walks

As of August 2012, Sunita Williams has completed seven spacewalks totaling 50 hours and 40 minutes, making her fifth on the list of world’s most experienced spacewalkers. On August 30, 2012, Williams participated in the US EVA-18 spacewalk with JAXA astronaut Akihiko Hoshide. They removed and replaced the main bus switching unit (MBSU-1) and installed a thermal cover on the pressurized mating adapter (PMA-2).
