Pigache (Shoes)

The “pigache,” alternatively referred to by various names, represented a style of footwear characterized by a pointed and upturned tip at the toes. This particular shoe gained popularity in Western Europe [1] throughout the Romanesque Period [2] . Additionally, the term “pigache” is occasionally used to describe earlier Byzantine footwear that shares similar attributes. The term “pigage” in English was borrowed from the French language. In French, the term originally referred to a type of hoe and was also used in hunting to describe a wild boar’s hoofprint that was longer on one side than the other. This term transitioned to Medieval Latin as “pigacia” and “pigatia.”

The peaches received several other names, including “pigage,” “pulley shoe,” “pulley toe,” and “pulley-toe shoe.” Less frequently, it adopted names based on derogatory terms used by Orderic Vitalis, such as “scorpion’s tail” or “ram’s horn shoe.” Furthermore, the name “pigage” sometimes extended its application to earlier pointed Byzantine footwear, even dating back to the 5th century. Additionally, “pigage” was occasionally simply described as a pointed-toe shoe and occasionally confused with the later “poulaine.”

Pigache - Biography Points

In an illuminated manuscript dated 1120, Lambert’s Liber Floridus portrays the Antichrist wearing peaches or their corresponding patterns, which are exaggeratedly extended into long and absurd horns. This distinctive style eventually evolved into the poulaines of the 14th century, which people wore during that time.

In some cases, it has been referred to using terms like “scorpion’s tail” or “ram’s horn shoe,” based on Orderic Vitalis’s descriptions. Pigache Pronunciation

Pigache, pronounced as “pee-gahsh,” holds significance in wine lovers’ lexicon. Originating from French, this term denotes a specific aroma or flavor found in wines, notably those crafted from Pinot Noir grapes. Mastering the pronunciation of pigage adds a touch of sophistication to wine tasting and appreciation discussions.

In wine circles, Pigache is a distinctive scent evoking underbrush, damp earth, or the forest floor after rain. This elusive yet captivating aroma enriches the complexity and depth of wines, offering a sensory journey for discerning palates. Understanding how to pronounce pigage enhances one’s ability to articulate the nuances of wine, elevating the tasting experience to new heights.

In wine terminology, mastering the pronunciation of pigage is not merely about linguistic finesse but also about nurturing an appreciation for the intricate aromas and flavors that define exceptional wines. Whether engaging in casual conversations or formal tastings, confidently pronouncing Pigache signifies a deeper understanding and appreciation of the vinicultural world, enriching wine culture’s enjoyment and discourse.

The pigache featured a toe that was both pointed and curved, a characteristic likened by Orderic Vitalis to the tail of a scorpion (resembling a caudal scorpion). These shoes were occasionally filled with stuffing to enhance the firmness and elevation of the extension. Some pigage even had a small bell attached to the tip of the toe for decoration. Nevertheless, the length of pigage points was generally more restrained than the later poulaines that gained popularity in the 14th century, originating from Poland.

Priestly Byzantine Egyptian

The pigache gained fame in the late 11th and early 12th centuries, mocked by poets, critiqued by clergy, and even labeled “notorious.” St. Anselm, at the 1102 Synod of Westminster, added pigage bans to the Gregorian Reform, addressing slavery, sodomy, clerical marriage, inheritance, and simony.

In August 1215, Robert de Courson, once a professor and now a papal legate, banned Paris University faculty from pigage. The Fourth Lateran Council, the same year, banned Catholic clergy. Orderic Vitalis credited Fulk of Anjou (1043–1109) with the pigache’s creation, hiding bunions from his bride, Bertrade, in 1089. Ruth Wilcox thought pigaches evolved from Normans’ sabatons, elongated and turned down for stable riding in the late 11th century.

Pigaches flourished in William Rufus’s England (r. 1087–1100). Courtier Robert the Horny (Robertus Cornardus) curled shoe tips into ram’s horn shapes (instar cornu arietis). Orderic linked pigage popularity to effeminate men and “foul catamites” in royal courts, used for promiscuity with women. William of Malmesbury questioned pigache wearers’ masculinity. Guibert of Nogent tied the style to women, Cordoba, effeminacy, and homosexuality.

Initially, pigage protruded up to 2 inches (5 cm) beyond feet, later compacted for a century. However, the Black Death and the showier poulaine style from Poland in the mid-14th century eclipsed the pigache.
