Youth Career

Adam Zampa started his cricket career as a medium pace bowler. However, Cricket Australia introduced an overs limit for fast bowlers in Under-14 matches, after which Zampa decided to change his bowling style. Inspired by Shane Warne, he changed his bowling style to leg spin.

Zampa made the Australian Under-19 cricket team in 2009 and participated in a successful campaign at the 2010 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He then signed a contract with the Blues in 2010. During this time he played two Youth Tests and eight Youth ODIs and took 11 wickets in both formats, marking his early cricket success.

Profile of Adam Zampa

Adam Zampa is an Australian cricketer known for his leg spin bowling. His audacity to toss the ball up and ability to spin like Shane Warne make him special. Born in South Australia, Zampa began his cricket career as a medium pacer, but following Cricket Australia’s restrictions on the number of overs for fast bowlers, he adopted legspin and adopted Shane Warne’s technique.  Zampa started his cricket career in 2010 with the Australian Under-19 team and was part of the team that won the Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He then signed for New South Wales in 2010 and made his first-class debut against Queensland in the Sheffield Shield in the 2012–13 season. He later moved to South Australia where he further refined his game and excelled in the 2015–16 season. Zampa made his ODI and T20I debut in 2016 and soon became a key part of the Australian team in the limited overs format. He was also included in the 2016 T20 World Cup, although the tournament in Australia was not a success. Nevertheless, Zampa’s performance made him a key bowler at the international level.

Zampa also excelled in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). In the 2016 IPL, he bowled brilliantly while playing for Pune and took 6 wickets against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Likewise, became the most successful spinner in the 2016 CPL with 15 wickets. Although Zampa did not make his debut in Test cricket, he cemented his place in the limited-overs format. His miserly economy and his struggle for wickets made him a key member of the Australian spin bowling.

Zampa’s style of bowling and his constant hard work made him a prominent figure in the world of cricket. He is still trying to improve his game and is known as a key player for the Australian team.

Domestic Career (2010-2016)

Adam Zampa started his cricket career with New South Wales. In 2010, he received a rookie contract with New South Wales, but did not get many opportunities at the state level as New South Wales already had successful spin bowlers like Nathan Horitz, Steve O’Keefe and Steve Smith. However, in the meantime, he represented Australia in the Hong Kong Cricket Sixes in 2011, where he had the opportunity to further refine his game.

First Class Debut

Zampa made his first-class debut for New South Wales in the 2012–13 Sheffield Shield season against Queensland, where he took five wickets and was instrumental in the team’s victory. During that season, he took 10 wickets in three first-class matches at an average of 23 runs per wicket.

In South Australia (2013–2016)

In the summer of 2013, Zampa joined the South Australian squad. One of the main reasons behind the move was that he got a chance to gain experience under the tutelage of South African spinner Johan Botha, who was the captain of South Australia at the time. The move proved to be a turning point for Zampa and markedly improved his cricketing skills.

Successful Performance

Zampa excelled in the 2014-15 Matador BBQs ODI Cup. He took a hat-trick against Western Australia and took figures of 4/18. After that, he put in more successful performances for South Australia in the 2015–16 season and during this time made the Australian squad for his ODI and T20 international career. Also, in BBL|05, he produced a brilliant performance, which included the extraordinary move of running out Peter Neville.

After his fame at the international level, Adam Zampa also ventured into franchise cricket. In 2022, he was bought by Welsh Fire for the 2022 season of The Hundred, further increasing his importance in franchise cricket. Zampa’s domestic career proved to be a solid foundation for him, in which he found the opportunity to hone his playing skills and play successful cricket in limited-overs formats. During this time, his spin bowling technique and constant hard work made him stand out in the world of cricket not only in his country but also globally.

International Career (2016-onwards)

Zampa made his international debut on 6 February 2016 in the second match of the 2015–16 Chappell–Hadley Trophy series, where he made his ODI debut. After that, he made his Twenty20 International debut on 4 March 2016 against South Africa. Zampa became a regular for Australia in both formats and was also included in Australia’s squad for the 2016 World T20.

He excelled in the World T20, where he became Australia’s leading wicket-taker with five wickets at an average of 13.80 and an economy rate of 6.27. This performance included figures of 3/23 against Bangladesh.

Along with Zampa’s international success, he was also active in franchise cricket. He took 6 wickets for 19 runs for Rising Pune Supergiant while playing against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Indian Premier League during 2016–17. This performance gave him the third best bowling record in IPL history.

In addition, he also played for the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League, where he took 15 wickets at an average of 18.46, the most wickets among all spin bowlers.

Failure in Test Cricket

Despite being successful in the shorter forms of cricket, Zampa failed to make the Australian team in Test cricket. He tried to find exceptional form in the Sheffield Shield, but under the influence of South Australia’s fast bowlers, his chances were few and far between. In early 2017, he was discussed for the Test series against India, but was not included in the squad.

Global Tournaments and Achievements

Zampa was included in Australia’s squad for the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, but he got less playing opportunities. He was again included in the Australian team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup, and he performed brilliantly in the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Where he took five wickets against Bangladesh for the first time in T20 cricket.

Success in 2023 ICC World Cup

Zampa performed brilliantly in the 2023 ICC World Cup. After joining the team as the only spinner due to Ashton Agar’s injury, he bagged the Man of the Match award with figures of 4/47 against Sri Lanka. After that, he excelled against Pakistan and England as well, picking up important wickets.

In the 2016 World T20, hosted by India, Zampa established himself as Australia’s most prominent wicket-taker. His continued improvement earned him a prominent place in Australia’s ODI and T20 set-up till 2019.

He took 13 wickets at an economy rate of just 5.81 through his skidding stock delivery with a sophisticated wrist spin. His performance impressed many critics and was considered unlucky not to be named Man of the Tournament.
