Grimace Shake (Milkshake)

The Grimace Shake is a berry-flavored milkshake that was first introduced at McDonald’s restaurants in the United States from June 12 to July 9, 2023, to celebrate the 52nd birthday of Grimace, the beloved purple character from McDonaldland. The following year, the shake made a second limited appearance in Canada, starting on May 14, 2024.

The shake gained popularity on TikTok and YouTube with the #GrimaceShake trend, where users filmed themselves drinking the shake and then staging ominous situations. McDonald’s stated that they did not orchestrate the TikTok trend but benefited from the increased attention and sales. Part of McDonald’s promotion involved paying Fandom to replace the McDonald’s Wiki page for Grimace with a promotional advertisement, which angered some fans.

Background

Grimace was introduced in the McDonaldland media franchise in 1971 as “Evil Grimace,” a character with four arms who would steal milkshakes. McDonald’s soon changed his character to a friendly, purple, two-armed blob who loves milkshakes and accompanies Ronald McDonald and other characters in advertisements. Some McDonald’s representatives described Grimace as an “embodiment of a milkshake or a taste bud,” though his identity remains open to interpretation for many fans. Grimace comes from Grimace Island, along with other family members, including Uncle O’Grimacey, who is known for bringing Shamrock Shakes for Saint Patrick’s Day. In the U.S., Grimace’s exact birthday was uncertain, though during the Grimace Birthday promotion in June 2023, he was stated to be 52 years old. After the shake’s release in Canada, his birthday was confirmed to be June 12, 1972.

Product Description

The Grimace Shake is a purple, berry-flavored milkshake, combining vanilla soft serve with berry flavors. The company did not disclose the exact flavoring used, and consumers reported tasting hints of Fruity Pebbles or bubblegum. The shake was available as a standalone product and as part of the Grimace Birthday Meal, which includes the shake, medium fries, and a choice of a Big Mac or 10-piece Chicken McNuggets.

Roll-out

In June 2023, McDonald’s announced the release of the Grimace Shake by changing their profile picture on TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram to a picture of Grimace looking at the shake. To accompany the release, McDonald’s introduced a Game Boy-themed browser game called “Grimace’s Birthday,” developed by Krool Toys, along with other Grimace-inspired merchandise. McDonald’s also paid Fandom to replace the article about Grimace on the McDonald’s wiki with a promotion for its Grimace merchandise, which led to some controversy. Additionally, McDonald’s suggested that people donate to the Ronald McDonald House Charities “in lieu of gifts” for Grimace.

The Grimace Shake was discontinued in the United States on July 9, 2023, following the end of the “Grimace’s Birthday Meal” promotion. However, due to popular demand, the shake returned to participating Canadian McDonald’s locations for a limited time starting May 14, 2024.

Critical Reviews

The Grimace Shake received mixed reviews. Some people were confused about its flavor, with McDonald’s employees humorously saying it tastes like “Grimace.” Dane Rivera of Uproxx praised it as the best flavor in the McDonald’s milkshake lineup, while Delish described it as “the sweetest berry smoothie of your life.” Conversely, Rechel Chapman of Elite Daily was not a fan, finding it “very fruity and artificial tasting.” Insider’s review noted the shake was smooth and not too sweet but ultimately underwhelming. Steven Luna of Mashed.com called it “pretty” and “magical-looking” but ultimately disappointing and a “troubling tribute to a garrulous grape-colored goofball who deserves so much better.”

TikTok Trend

The Grimace Shake gained significant popularity on TikTok with the hashtag #GrimaceShake. Users filmed themselves wishing Grimace a happy birthday while drinking the shake, then cutting to scenes where they appeared in strange locations or were found “dead” with the shake splattered around, implying Grimace was responsible. TikTok user @thefrazmaz (Austin Frazier) is credited with starting this trend. The trend’s popularity was similar to a previous one involving a Whopper promotion for “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and extended to other products like Barbie-themed items from Krispy Kreme and Cold Stone, where consumers appeared more feminine or “yassified” after consumption. As of July 12, the hashtag had over one billion views.

Response from McDonald's

McDonald’s did not anticipate the Grimace Shake’s viral popularity or the related trends. The company responded with a humorous TikTok video featuring Grimace, captioned: “meee pretending i don’t see the grimace shake trendd [sic].” Guillaume Huin, McDonald’s social media director, described the trend as “brilliant creativity, unfiltered fun, peak absurdist Gen Z humor.” He noted that while acknowledging the trend publicly was risky, the campaign had already been wildly successful both socially and commercially.

Sales Impact

The launch of the Grimace Shake significantly boosted McDonald’s sales. In the next quarter, stores that had been open for at least a year saw a 10.3% increase in sales. From April to June 2023, sales rose by 12%, exceeding The Wall Street Journal’s estimate of 9.3%. McDonald’s reported $6.5 billion in sales for the quarter following the shake’s release, surpassing sales estimates by $200 million. However, the increased business caused some issues, as some customers poured the shake on themselves inside the store, creating a nuisance for employees.

Advertising

There was speculation that the Grimace Shake trend on TikTok was an intentional advertising strategy aimed at raising brand awareness among younger audiences. The shake’s indeterminate flavor and unnatural purple color garnered significant attention on social media. However, McDonald’s stated that they did not intend for the shake to become viral. McDonald’s social media director described the trend as “a level of genius creativity and organic fun that I could never dream about or plan for—it was all from the fans, and the fans only.” The trend’s virality on social media also boosted McDonald’s sales, as many customers bought the shake after seeing the trend on TikTok, leading to some stores running out of ice cream early in the day.

Fandom Advertisement

During the Grimace Shake promotion in June 2023, McDonald’s paid Fandom to replace the Grimace page on the McDonald’s Wiki with an advertisement promoting the shake and other Grimace-related media, such as the video game. This move led to controversy, with Nathan Steinmetz, who wrote the original Grimace article, stating that it disrupted editorial independence. Fandom staff mentioned that the paid advertisement from McDonald’s would last for the duration of the promotion, and users would not be able to edit the page during this time.
