Early Life and Education

Born and raised in South Central Los Angeles, Tiffany Haddish’s early life was marked by significant challenges. Her father, Tsihaye Reda Haddish, was an Eritrean Jew, while her mother, Leola, was an African-American Jehovah’s Witness. After her father left when she was three, her mother remarried, resulting in Haddish gaining two half-sisters and two half-brothers. Tiffany Haddish took on the responsibility of caring for her three younger siblings. At the same time, her mother worked long nights at the post office, shaping her resilience and comedic spirit from an early age.

In 1988, while living in Colton, California, Haddish’s mother suffered severe brain damage in a car accident, which led to her developing schizophrenia. Haddish, then nine, became the primary caregiver for her younger siblings. During this time, she discovered her love for comedy, using humour to cope with the family’s difficulties and to protect herself from bullies at school.

Haddish later revealed that her stepfather had tampered with the brakes on her mother’s car, intending to cause a fatal accident. Fortunately, the accident did not result in death, as the children chose to stay home that day.

At age 13, Haddish turned, and her siblings were put in foster care. Comedy became her coping mechanism during this period. By 15, they were reunited under their grandmother’s care. Early in life, she was hospitalized with toxic shock syndrome and struggled academically but improved with tutoring.

She attended George Ellery Hale Middle School and graduated from El Camino Real High School, where she was the school mascot. Despite her award-winning performances in drama competitions, where she delivered Shakespearean monologues, she frequently found herself in trouble at school. Although she struggled with reading until high school, tutoring helped her overcome this challenge. After graduation, Haddish experienced homelessness, living in her car while pursuing her comedy career.

In 1997, a social worker gave her an ultimatum: attend psychiatric therapy or join the Laugh Factory Comedy Camp. She chose comedy, which she credits with saving her life. Mentorship from comedians like Richard Pryor and Dane Cook fueled her passion for comedy, which she incorporates into her performances as a “safe space.”

Though accepted to New York University, Haddish chose not to attend due to financial constraints. She later enrolled at Santa Monica College. Before achieving fame, she worked various jobs, including customer service roles at Air New Zealand and Alaska Airlines, and lived in her car during her early comedy career.

In 2015, Haddish gained prominence when she was cast as Nekeisha in Jerrod Carmichael’s series The Carmichael Show (NBC, 2015-17).However, her breakout role came in the raunchy comedy “Girls Trip” (2017), where she played the wildest member of an all-girl road trip party. Much like Melissa McCarthy’s rise in “Bridesmaids” (2011), Haddish became a household name almost overnight and quickly capitalized on her time in the spotlight.

Her breakout moment came in 2017 with the comedy film Girls Trip, where she starred alongside Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Queen Latifah. The film received acclaim for its humor and earned over $140 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing comedy film of that year. Critics praised Haddish’s portrayal of the exuberant Dina, comparing her performance to that of Melissa McCarthy. Girls Trip was listed among the best film performances of the 21st century by The New Yorker.

In August 2017, Haddish’s stand-up comedy special Tiffany Haddish: She Ready! From the Hood to Hollywood premiered on Showtime, earning her significant praise for its humour and candour. She also co-hosted the BET game show Face Value and became the first African-American woman stand-up comedian to host Saturday Night Live, winning a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. Her memoir, The Last Black Unicorn, was a bestseller and debuted at #15 on The New York Times list.

2018–Present: Expanding Horizons

In 2018, Haddish starred opposite Tracy Morgan in the TBS sitcom The Last O.G., marking her first lead role in a sitcom. That year, she appeared in Uncle Drew and played a lead role in Night School with Kevin Hart, reuniting with Girls Trip director Malcolm D. Lee. Her comedy special Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready premiered on Netflix, featuring stand-up sets from emerging comedians.

Haddish starred in Like a Boss (2020), her first studio comedy film of the decade. Despite being asked to host the 2021 Grammy Awards pre-telecast ceremony, she declined due to issues with the Recording Academy covering her expenses. She won the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album for Black Mitzvah, with the announcement occurring during the filming of Kids Say the Darndest Things.

From 2021 to 2022, Haddish lent her voice to Lady K in the animated series Karma’s World, continuing her diverse career in entertainment.

Citizenship and Heritage

In May 2019, Haddish became a naturalized Eritrean citizen during the 28th anniversary celebrations of Eritrean independence from Ethiopia. Her visit to Eritrea in 2018 was motivated by her desire to honour her late father, who had fled to the U.S. as a refugee, and to connect with her Eritrean relatives. Haddish has faced criticism for supporting Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, who has been in power since the country’s independence.

Haddish, who is Jewish, learned about her Jewish heritage later in life after growing up in foster care. Embracing her Jewish roots, she converted to Judaism and celebrated her bat mitzvah at age 40 in December 2019. The ceremony was led by Reform Rabbi Susan Silverman, and comedian Billy Crystal, a close supporter of Haddish’s conversion, was in attendance.

Activism and Philanthropy

Haddish is an advocate for foster care and has partnered with Living Advantage, Inc. for her Suitcase Drive for Foster Youth, which provides suitcases for children in foster care to store their belongings. She is also involved with the Laugh Factory Comedy Camp and supports foster care programs through her She Ready Foundation.

Personal Life

At 13, Olsen embraced atheism, believing that religion should foster community and provide solace in prayer rather than dictate women’s freedoms. She once held a real estate license in New York, which she obtained shortly after relocating there. Olsen serves as an ambassador for Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. She was in a relationship with actor Boyd Holbrook from 2011 to 2014.

In July 2019, Olsen got engaged to Robbie Arnett, a musician from the band Milo Greene, following three years of courtship. The couple quietly tied the knot, and they currently reside in Los Angeles. They collaborated on two children’s books, “Hattie Harmony: Worry Detective,” released in June 2022, and “Hattie Harmony: Opening Night,” released in June 2023, drawing from their shared experiences with anxiety.

Legal Issues

In January 2022, Haddish was arrested in Peachtree City, Georgia, for driving under the influence (DUI). The arrest followed a 911 call reporting a driver asleep at the wheel. Haddish was found trying to park her car and was released from Fayette County Jail the same day on a $1,666 bond. At the time, she was in the area filming Haunted Mansion.

On November 24, 2023, Haddish faced another DUI charge in Beverly Hills after police received a report of an unresponsive woman at the wheel.

Controversies

In August 2022, Haddish and comedian Aries Spears were sued for alleged grooming and sexual abuse involving two minors. The lawsuit claimed that the minors were recruited for comedy skits with sexually suggestive content. Haddish’s attorney, Andrew Brettler, stated that the lawsuit lacked merit. Haddish later expressed regret over participating in a skit she deemed inappropriate. The lawsuit was eventually dismissed after the plaintiffs retracted their claims, affirming that Haddish would never intentionally harm them.

Haddish continues to navigate her career and personal life amidst these challenges and remains a prominent figure in entertainment and advocacy.
