Lily Allen Isn’t Loving Cowboy Carter

In the latest gossip from the world of celebrities, Lily Allen had a few things to share about Beyoncé’s venture into country music. On her podcast, “Miss Me?” (yes, Lily Allen has a podcast), the British singer critiqued some of Beyoncé’s decisions on her album “Cowboy Carter,” hinting at a meticulously planned promotional strategy. Brace yourselves, drama ahead.

Lily Allen’s podcast partner, Miquita Oliver, kicked off the discussion by expressing her dissatisfaction with Beyoncé’s rendition of “Jolene,” arguing that it felt like a typical hip-hop beat overlaid on a classic country tune. Clearly, we’re not dealing with the most reverent music critics here, but let’s keep going.

“Yeah, it’s intriguing how she chose to tackle a new genre by covering one of its biggest hits,” Allen remarked. “You do you, Beyoncé, but is she channeling Dolly or just doing her own thing?”

Honestly, I’m not even that invested in the “Jolene” cover—I prefer “Blackbird”—but Allen’s critique falls flat. What did she expect Beyoncé to do? Cover some obscure Waylon Jennings track? This is the same artist who dropped an entire album about marital infidelity; covering America’s top cheating anthem is par for the course.

“It all seems rather calculated,” Allen continued. “Remember Jay-Z’s Grammy appearance? That was all part of the rollout, before the album was even announced. She was rocking the blonde wig and cowboy hat.” Beyoncé is a savvy businesswoman and a Virgo—of course, she had a meticulously planned album rollout. Listening to this conversation, you’d think Allen hadn’t been in the music industry for nearly two decades.

The most amusing part of this podcast episode (which I can’t really recommend) is when Allen reveals she’s currently in Nashville working on her own album. “I’m not out to dominate the country scene,” she clarified. “I’m here because I genuinely love country music—it’s about storytelling, and that’s what I aim for in my music.” Finally, a Brit explaining country music on a podcast—that’s what we all needed, right?
