Charles Henry Bennett (born 1943 in New York City, New York, U.S.) is a distinguished physicist, information theorist, and IBM Fellow at IBM Research. Over the course of his illustrious career, Bennett has profoundly impacted the understanding of the physical basis of information by applying quantum physics to the complexities surrounding information exchange. Bennett’s academic journey began with a B.S. in chemistry from Brandeis University in 1964, followed by a PhD from Harvard University in 1970, where he conducted pioneering molecular dynamics studies. His postdoctoral work at Argonne National Laboratory further honed his expertise, eventually leading him to IBM Research in 1972. At IBM, Bennett expanded on the work of Rolf Landauer, demonstrating that general-purpose computation could be achieved using a logically and thermodynamically reversible apparatus.

A key milestone in Bennett’s career was his collaboration with Gilles Brassard, resulting in the creation of the BB84 protocol for quantum cryptography. This revolutionary system leverages the uncertainty principle to ensure secure communication, marking a significant advancement in the field. Their work in quantum cryptography set the stage for practical quantum communication systems, with Bennett and Brassard’s contributions being foundational to the field.

In addition to his work in quantum cryptography, Bennett, Brassard, and other collaborators discovered the phenomenon of quantum teleportation. This groundbreaking research demonstrated that the complete information of an unknown quantum state could be decomposed into classical information and non-classical EPR correlations, transmitted separately, and reassembled to recreate the original state. Early Life and Education

Born in 1943 in New York City, Bennett earned a B.S. in chemistry from Brandeis University in 1964. He received his PhD from Harvard University in 1970, where he conducted molecular-dynamics studies under David Turnbull and Berni Alder. He also worked as a teaching assistant for James Watson, focusing on the genetic code. Bennett continued his research for two years at Argonne National Laboratory under Aneesur Rahman before joining IBM Research in 1972.

Early Collaborations and Quantum Cryptography

While at Brandeis, Bennett formed a lasting friendship with fellow student Stephen Wiesner. Wiesner, during his graduate studies at Columbia, shared his innovative idea of using quantum mechanics to create non-counterfeitable money. This concept involved a “quantum” banknote embedded with 20 two-state quantum systems, which would alter if anyone attempted to measure and duplicate the states.

Despite Wiesner’s paper on the subject not being published at the time, Bennett remained captivated by the idea. In 1979, while attending a computer science conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Bennett saw Gilles Brassard, a Canadian computer scientist, was scheduled to talk about cryptography. Bennett approached Brassard and shared Wiesner’s quantum money concept, sparking their collaboration.

Together, Bennett and Brassard developed the first quantum cryptography scheme, known as BB84, named after their initials and the year of publication. This groundbreaking method allowed secure communication by encoding information in polarized photons. The technique involved Alice sending single polarized photons to Bob, who measured them using different bases. By comparing their bases, Alice and Bob could detect eavesdroppers and establish a secure key. BB84 was first experimentally tested in 1989 and has been successfully used over distances up to 1,200 km between an artificial satellite and an Earth station.

Quantum Teleportation

In 1993, Bennett, Brassard, and their collaborators introduced a method for “teleporting” a quantum state between subatomic particles using quantum entanglement. In this process, measuring a property of one particle instantly determines the same property in another entangled particle, regardless of the distance between them. This method involves entangling a third particle with one of the particles in the original entangled pair, thereby transferring its properties. Austrian physicist Anton Zeilinger and his team demonstrated quantum teleportation in 1997, and Zeilinger later received the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work.

Later Work

Between 1995 and 1997, Bennett, working with Smolin, Wootters, DiVincenzo, and others, introduced techniques for the faithful transmission of classical and quantum information through noisy channels. He also contributed to the concept of entanglement distillation, advancing the field of quantum information and computation theory.

Recognitions and Honors

Bennett is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. His numerous accolades include the 2006 Rank Prize in opto-electronics, the 2008 Harvey Prize by the Technion, the 2017 Dirac Medal of the ICTP, the 2018 Wolf Prize in Physics, the 2019 Shannon Award, the 2019 BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Basic Sciences, the 2023 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, and the 2023 Eduard Rhein Foundation Prize in Technology.
