Daniel Hannan (British Politician)

Daniel John Hannan, Baron Hannan of Kingsclere (born 1 September 1971) is a British writer, journalist, and long-time Conservative politician known for his strong belief in national independence and free trade. Born in Lima, Peru, and raised between South America and the UK, he later studied Modern History at Oxford, where he began shaping the ideas that would define his political career.

Hannan entered public life in 1999, when he was elected as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for South East England — a position he held for more than two decades until Britain’s exit from the EU in 2020. During this period, he became widely recognized for his clear communication style and his consistent arguments for democratic accountability within Europe. He helped shape several major conservative movements, and later became the first secretary-general of the Alliance of Conservatives and Reformists in Europe (ACRE), serving from 2009 to 2018.

He played a major national role in Britain’s 2016 EU referendum, becoming one of the founding figures behind Vote Leave. As a board member and public speaker during the campaign, Hannan was frequently seen in debates presenting the case for Brexit. His long parliamentary career ended automatically when the UK officially left the EU in 2020.

Alongside politics, Hannan has built a respected career in journalism. His writing has appeared in internationally known publications such as The Sunday Telegraph, The International Business Times, ConservativeHome, The Washington Examiner, and occasionally in The Daily Mail, The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph, The Sun, The Spectator, and The Wall Street Journal. He also serves as the editor-in-chief of The Conservative, a quarterly journal focusing on centre-right ideas.

After Brexit, Hannan continued shaping public policy. In 2020, he was appointed as an adviser to the UK Board of Trade, and in 2021, he entered the House of Lords as Baron Hannan of Kingsclere. He is also the founding president of the Initiative for Free Trade, reflecting his long-standing commitment to open markets and global commerce.

Today, Daniel Hannan remains an influential voice in British political thought — a figure whose career blends writing, debate, and public service with a consistent message about freedom, sovereignty, and prosperity.

Early life and education

Daniel John Hannan was born on 1 September 1971 in Lima, Peru, to British parents. His birth abroad gave him early exposure to international culture, but his upbringing remained strongly connected to British traditions. During his childhood, he spent time between South America and the United Kingdom, which helped shape his interest in global politics from an early age.

Hannan moved permanently to the UK during his school years, where he continued his studies and developed a strong academic foundation. By the late 1980s, he had become increasingly interested in history, political debates, and public affairs — interests that later defined his career.

In 1989, Hannan began his higher education at Christ Church, Oxford, where he studied Modern History. His years at Oxford were influential: he actively engaged in student politics, debate societies, and discussions on national sovereignty. During this period, he also supported campaigns that promoted Britain’s independent decision-making, long before the national Brexit debate emerged.

He graduated from Oxford in the early 1990s, carrying with him a strong belief in democratic accountability and free-market principles. His academic training, combined with his multicultural childhood, laid the groundwork for his future roles as a writer, journalist, and political figure.

Career

After finishing his studies, Daniel Hannan quickly moved into political activism and public commentary. In 1993, he became the first director of the European Research Group (ERG) — a platform for Eurosceptic Conservative MPs. Between 1994 and 1995, he served as Chairman of the National Association of Conservative Graduates. In 1996, Hannan began a career in journalism — he joined The Daily Telegraph as a leader-writer. He continued writing influential opinion pieces there until 2004, and thereafter remained active as a columnist and commentator for various international publications.

In 1999 Hannan was elected as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for South East England. Over the next two decades, he was re-elected multiple times (2004, 2009, 2014), consistently leading the Conservative list for his constituency. During his tenure in the European Parliament, he sat on various committees — including constitutional affairs, citizens’ freedoms, and delegations for international relations.

Hannan used his platform as MEP to campaign against deeper European integration. He was vocal in opposing EU treaties and the euro — working throughout his political life to defend national sovereignty and democratic oversight. In 2016, Hannan became one of the founders of the campaign Vote Leave, which strongly advocated for the UK’s exit from the European Union. He served on its board throughout the referendum campaign and participated in multiple public debates. After the UK formally left the EU — and his role as MEP ended in 2020 — Hannan continued his public involvement in different capacities. He was appointed as an adviser to the UK Board of Trade (from 2020).

In 2021, he was elevated to the peerage as Baron Hannan of Kingsclere, becoming a member of the House of Lords. Parallel to his political career, Hannan remained active as a journalist and author. He has written columns for several major publications — including The Daily Telegraph, The Washington Examiner, ConservativeHome, and more. He also launched the quarterly journal The Conservative in 2016, aiming to promote centre-right political thought.

Moreover, Hannan has authored several books focusing on history, politics, and freedom. His writings reflect his long-held beliefs in free markets, individual liberty, and national sovereignty — themes that have defined both his political and intellectual journey.

Daniel Hannan’s career spans journalism, politics, and public advocacy, making him one of the most influential conservative voices in the UK and Europe. He began his professional journey in 1996 as a leader-writer for The Daily Telegraph, where he contributed opinion pieces and political analysis that gained attention for their clarity and strong arguments. Over time, his writing appeared in other prominent publications, including The Sunday Telegraph, The International Business Times, ConservativeHome, The Washington Examiner, and occasionally in The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph, The Sun, The Spectator, and The Wall Street Journal. He also serves as editor-in-chief of The Conservative, a quarterly journal promoting centre-right thought.

Political Positions

Daniel Hannan has long been recognized for his strong conservative and Eurosceptic views. As a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for South East England from 1999 to 2020, Hannan took positions that reflected limited government, free markets, and individual freedoms. He was a founding member of Vote Leave, actively participating in the 2016 Brexit referendum, where he campaigned for the UK to leave the EU. In this role, he emphasized democratic accountability, free trade, and reforming EU institutions to reduce centralized control.

Hannan also supports free trade and open markets, founding the Initiative for Free Trade to promote international commerce without restrictive barriers. He believes that global trade agreements can strengthen national economies while preserving national decision-making powers.

Following Brexit, Hannan continued to hold influential positions. In 2020, he became an adviser to the UK Board of Trade, focusing on trade policies and international economic relations. In 2021, he entered the House of Lords as Baron Hannan of Kingsclere, taking the Conservative whip, allowing him to continue shaping UK politics while contributing to debates on sovereignty, trade, and governance.
