After that, at the age of 30, he became the chief financial officer (CFO) of Commercial Credit and later served as the company’s president.

Dimon was the chief operating officer (COO) of the insurance company Travelers and the brokerage firm Smith Barney from 1990 to 1998. In 1998, he became president of Citigroup, which was formed from the merger of Travelers Group and Citicorp. In 2000, he became chairman and CEO of BankOne, and in 2004, after the merger with JPMorgan Chase, he became president and COO of the company. James Dimon took over as CEO on January 1, 2006, and later became chairman of the board a year later. Early Life and Education

Jamie Damon was born in New York City and raised in the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens. He is one of three sons of Theodore and Themis (née Kalos) Damon, who were of Greek descent. His grandfather was a Greek immigrant who worked as a banker in Smyrna and Athens and later changed the family name from Papadimitriou to Damon. Jamie has an older brother, Peter, and a fraternal twin brother, Ted. Both his father and grandfather had worked as stockbrokers in Sherman. Jamie Damon received his early education at the Browning School and then studied psychology and economics at Tufts University, from which he graduated summa cum laude.

At Tufts, he wrote a thesis on the Sherman merger, which his mother sent to Sandyville. Sandy Weil praised the paper and gave Jamie a summer job as a budgeting clerk at Shearson.

Professional beginnings

After graduation, Jamie worked in management consulting at the Boston Consulting Group for two years before enrolling at Harvard Business School. During his summers as a student at Harvard, he worked at Goldman Sachs. In 1982, he received his MBA from Harvard Business School with honors as a Baker Scholar.

Career

Sandy Weill left American Express in 1985, and Jamie Dimon followed him to Commercial Credit. After purchasing the company from Control Data, Dimon used his skills to help grow the company. At age 30, Dimon was appointed chief financial officer (CFO). In 1998, through a series of mergers and acquisitions, Jamie Dimon and Sandy Weill formed the financial services conglomerate that became known as Citigroup. But Dimon left Citigroup in November 1998, when Weill asked him to resign during an executive retreat.

Rumors circulated at the time that Dimon and Weill had a falling out in 1997 over Dimon’s failure to play an active role in the development of Weill’s daughter, Jessica M. Bibelewicz. Although this altercation occurred more than a year before Damon’s departure, some sources also cited Damon’s request for his equal status, which is said to be the real reason.

Transition to JPMorgan

In March 2000, Jamie Dimon became CEO of BankOne, one of the nation’s fifth-largest banks. In July 2004, when JPMorgan Chase merged with BankOne, Dimon was named president and chief operating officer (COO) of the combined company. On December 31, 2005, he was named chief executive officer (CEO) of JPMorgan Chase and a year later, on December 31, 2006, he became chairman and president of the company. Under Dimon’s leadership, JPMorgan Chase made several successful acquisitions and during his tenure, the bank became the largest bank in the United States by domestic assets, market capitalization value, and publicly traded stock value. In 2009, according to Brandon Wood International, a consulting agency, Dimon was considered one of “The Top Gun CEOs”.

On September 26, 2011, Dimon participated in a high-profile debate with Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney, in which Dimon said that the provisions of the Basel III international financial regulations discriminate against American banks and are “anti-American.” On May 10, 2012, JPMorgan Chase held an emergency conference call, in which Dimon stated that the bank had suffered a loss of at least $2 billion. The loss was described as “wrong, complex, poorly reviewed, poorly executed and poorly monitored.” The loss was caused by London whale trading. In January 2012, Dimon commented on the Volcker Rule, saying that he believed that market making was essential, and that there should be a large number of market makers in the United States.

In May 2023, Jamie Dimon testified in two lawsuits filed against JPMorgan Chase. In those cases, the bank was accused of providing services to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The bank dismissed the claims as without merit. Damon also serves on the executive committee of the Business Council, an organization of global CEOs. He was chairman of the organization’s executive committee in 2011 and 2012, and is also a board member of the Business Roundtable until 2024.

Fines and Settlements

Under Jamie Dimon’s leadership, JPMorgan Chase was fined a total of $38 billion by the U.S. government for legal and regulatory violations. The largest of these fines was a $13 billion settlement for mortgage mis-selling. The settlement was the second-largest settlement of the 2007-2008 financial crisis, behind Bank of America’s $16.65 billion settlement. Dimon called the settlement “unfair” and said he had difficulty controlling his anger over the matter. According to him, the lawsuits mostly related to pre-acquisition transactions of companies that JPMorgan Chase acquired during the financial crisis. 70-80% of the settlement was based on legal issues surrounding the acquisition of Bear Stearns and Washington Mutual, which JPMorgan Chase acquired with the encouragement of Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, New York Fed President Timothy Geithner, and other federal officials. These officials facilitated the acquisition, facilitated communication between the parties, and provided financial support to make the transaction possible.

During Dimon’s tenure, JPMorgan Chase focused on strengthening the company’s leadership capabilities and improving its control infrastructure and processes. The bank reiterated that it was working to strengthen each of its core businesses, regardless of the level of ownership.

Compensation

Jamie Dimon is one of the few bank CEOs to become billionaires, largely due to his stake in JPMorgan Chase. In fiscal 2011, Dimon received a pay package of $23 million, the highest of any bank CEO in the United States. However, in 2012, his compensation was reduced to $11.5 million after JPMorgan Chase suffered $6 billion in controversial trading losses. On January 24, 2014, it was announced that Dimon would receive $20 million for his work in 2013. During his tenure, the company posted record profits and a stock price increase, although the company suffered significant losses during the year due to scandals and fines. This compensation was a 74% increase, which included more than $18 million in restricted stock.

Dimon earned $34.5 million from JPMorgan Chase in fiscal 2022 and $36 million in fiscal 2023.

Business Access

Dimon writes his to-do list on a piece of paper, which he systematically checks off. He visits his clients, regulators, and various JPMorgan facilities because he believes these visits enable a process of learning, assessing, improving best practices, and providing insight. Dimon has mentioned that he uses the OODA loop method in scenario assessment. In a crisis situation, he has been described as a highly organized and informed leader.

Political activity

Jamie Dimon donated primarily to the Democratic Party from 1989 to 2009. In May 2012, he described himself as a “barely Democrat”. During the Obama administration, particularly when Timothy Geithner became Chancellor of the Exchequer, Dimon had close ties to certain individuals in the Obama White House. These included former Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. Dimon has often disagreed with some of Obama’s policies in his public life. During the 2016 European Union referendum, Dimon led JPMorgan Chase to donate large sums to the “Remain” campaign and personally campaigned against Brexit alongside Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne.

During the Donald Trump administration

In December 2016, Dimon joined the Forum for Economic Advice to then-President-elect Donald Trump. However, the forum disbanded after Trump’s comments on “alt-right” violence during a United the Right rally in 2017. During Trump’s presidency, Damon supported the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, but also criticized Trump’s immigration and trade policies.

Social issues and COVID-19

In a 2019 interview with 60 Minutes, Damon said that while the United States faces issues such as income inequality and the China-US trade war, the country is “by far the most prosperous economy in the world.” In addition, Damon criticized the US federal government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic in his letter to shareholders and drew attention to education, healthcare, and social safety nets in the United States.

2020 Presidential Election

During the 2020 Democratic Party presidential primaries, Damon criticized the lack of a “strong centrist, pro-business, pro-free enterprise” candidate. In 2018, he considered launching his own presidential campaign, but decided that it would be unpopular. During the election, Damon wrote a memorandum calling on candidates to respect the democratic process and the peaceful transition of power.

In November 2023, Damon said that if he ran in the 2024 United States presidential election, he would prefer Nikki Haley to Donald Trump. In August 2024, Damon wrote a column in The Washington Post in which he said that the next president “must restore our faith in America.” However, according to a report by The New York Times in October 2024, Damon privately supported Kamala Harris’ 2024 campaign.

Personal life

Jamie Damon married Judith Kent in 1983, whom he met at Harvard Business School. They have three daughters: Julia, Laura, and Cara Lee. Julia and Cara attended Duke University, while Laura is a graduate of Barnard College. Laura is a freelance journalist and previously worked for the New York Daily News, and most recently was a producer for ABC News.In 2014, Damon was diagnosed with throat cancer. He underwent eight weeks of radiation and chemotherapy, which ended in September 2014. In March 2020, at the age of 63, Damon underwent emergency heart surgery. The surgery was to repair a severe aortic dissection, which was a tear in the inner lining of the aorta, the largest blood vessel in the body.

According to JPMorgan, Dimon fully recovered from surgery and resumed running the bank’s operations alongside Gordon Smith and Daniel Pinto. In April 2020, it was announced that Dimon had returned to work in a remote capacity due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

His personal life, such as family and health issues, have revealed his simplicity and strength.
