Development
In June 2020, Universal Pictures, the original film’s international distributor, announced plans for a remake of the 1996 hit movie “Twister,” with Joseph Kosinski in talks to direct. Frank Marshall and Sara Scott were onboard as producers for the project. The following year, in June 2021, Helen Hunt expressed interest in developing a sequel to the original film. However, the studio declined Hunt’s proposal for writing and directing, citing her character’s fate in the potential sequel.
Fast forward to October 2022, and “Twisters” was announced to be in development, featuring a script penned by Mark L. Smith. Frank Marshall remained attached as a producer, while discussions were underway with directors Jimmy Chin, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, Dan Trachtenberg, and Travis Knight. There was optimism about Hunt reprising her role, with reports suggesting the focus would be on the daughter of her and Bill Paxton’s characters. The film’s narrative integrates climate change, drawing on insights from storm experts and tornado chasers to shed light on the evolving patterns and intensities of storms due to environmental shifts. Lee Isaac Chung was later brought on board to direct. This standalone sequel is a collaborative effort between Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Casting
Daisy Edgar-Jones landed the lead role in March 2023, followed by Glen Powell and Anthony Ramos joining the cast in April of the same year. Filming
With an estimated budget of $200 million, principal photography for the film began in May 2023 in the vicinity of Oklahoma City. The production primarily utilized Prairie Surf Studios for a 40-day period, with an additional 50 days of filming scheduled in metro Oklahoma City and various surrounding locations such as Chickasha, Okarche, El Reno, Spencer, and Cashion. However, filming faced a setback in July due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, leading to a temporary suspension. Fortunately, production resumed once the strike concluded in November 2023, ultimately wrapping up the following month.
Release
Twisters is slated for a theatrical release in the United States by Universal Pictures on July 19, 2024, and internationally by Warner Bros. Pictures.
