Snow White (2024 Film)

Disney’s Snow White, also known simply as Snow White, is an eagerly anticipated American musical fantasy film directed by Marc Webb. The screenplay, crafted by Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson, breathes new life into Walt Disney’s timeless 1937 animated classic, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which itself draws inspiration from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale of 1812. This live-action remake, co-produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Marc Platt Productions, promises to captivate audiences once again.

Set to enchant viewers, Rachel Zegler takes on the iconic role of Snow White, while Gal Gadot embodies the sinister Evil Queen. Plans for this reimagining were set in motion back in October 2016, with Wilson onboard as the screenwriter. Webb’s involvement as director was confirmed in September 2019, following discussions that began in May 2019. Filming unfolded primarily at Pinewood Studios in England from March to July 2022, with the renowned Moving Picture Company handling the visual effects.

Despite the excitement surrounding the project, Snow White has faced its share of pre-release controversies. Criticism has emerged regarding Zegler’s involvement in the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes, alterations to the original story, color-blind casting choices, and the portrayal of originally dwarf characters by actors without dwarfism. Nevertheless, with the release date set for March 21, 2025, and the unveiling of the first official image featuring Zegler as Snow White alongside the beloved dwarfs, anticipation continues to build for this enchanting cinematic experience.

Development

Reports surfaced on October 31, 2016, indicating that Walt Disney Pictures had embarked on the development of a live-action remake of the classic tale, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, with discussions underway for Erin Cressida Wilson to pen the screenplay. Subsequently, on May 30, 2019, news emerged that Marc Webb was in negotiations to take on the directorial reins for the project. Fast forward to November 2021, and it was revealed that Greta Gerwig was set to co-write the screenplay, adding further anticipation to the film’s production. Additionally, Gurinder Chadha was reportedly a strong contender for involvement in the project.

Casting

In June 2021, Rachel Zegler secured the titular role in the upcoming live-action adaptation. Later, in November, Gal Gadot joined the cast as the formidable Evil Queen. During an interview with ExtraTV on December 7, 2021, Zegler hinted that her portrayal of Snow White would showcase a newfound strength compared to the original character. Subsequently, a fresh casting search was initiated to find a young actress to depict a younger iteration of Snow White in the remake.

On January 12, 2022, Andrew Burnap was announced to take on the role of Jonathan, a new character introduced in the film, effectively replacing the traditional character of The Prince. At the 2022 Denver Fan Expo, Martin Klebba disclosed his role as Grumpy in the production. Klebba’s experience in similar dwarf roles from prior adaptations of the “Snow White” fairy tale adds depth to his portrayal.

In August 2023, Renata Vaca, known for her role in Saw X, emerged as a finalist for the role of Snow White alongside Zegler. Despite Vaca’s talents, Zegler ultimately clinched the role. Vaca, a Mexican national, emphasized the inclusive nature of the casting process, highlighting its openness to all ethnicities. Furthermore, in January 2024, Emilia Faucher, known for her performance in CODA, was reportedly cast to depict the younger version of Snow White, adding another layer of depth to the character’s portrayal.

Filming

Originally slated to commence in March 2020 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Los Angeles, California, filming for Snow White faced a delay until July 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In August 2021, a shift was announced, with filming relocating to the United Kingdom from March to July 2022. Principal photography kicked off on March 7, 2022. However, a setback occurred when a fire broke out on March 15 at Pinewood Studios, damaging the production set. Fortunately, no filming was in progress at the time. The shooting schedule was adjusted to accommodate Rachel Zegler’s attendance at the 94th Academy Awards ceremony on March 27, during which Gal Gadot began filming her scenes. Gadot later revealed in a podcast interview that she sings and dances in the film, a departure from the original character. By April 22, Gadot had wrapped up her filming, describing her experience playing the first Disney villain as “fun and delicious.” Zegler announced the completion of filming on July 13.

Music

Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, renowned songwriters known for their work on Disney’s 2019 remake of Aladdin, are tasked with crafting new songs for the upcoming film. Their previous collaboration with Disney has garnered acclaim, and their involvement raises anticipation for the musical elements of the project. Additionally, the film is anticipated to include beloved songs from the original soundtrack by Frank Churchill and Larry Morey, with actress Zegler confirming the inclusion of classics like “Whistle While You Work.” This blend of new compositions and nostalgic favorites promises to enhance the cinematic experience for audiences.

Marketing

During Disney’s 2022 D23 Expo presentation on September 9, 2022, audiences were treated to a tantalizing glimpse of the upcoming Snow White adaptation. A 30-second first-look teaser and accompanying images offered a sneak peek into the film’s major settings, including Snow White’s enchanting cottage, the opulent interiors of the Queen’s castle, and the mystical moss-covered forest. Viewers caught fleeting glimpses of Gal Gadot as the formidable Evil Queen, Rachel Zegler embodying the role of Snow White, and pivotal scenes such as Snow White’s fateful encounter with the poisoned apple.

Gal Gadot, reflecting on her role as the Evil Queen, remarked on the departure from her previous characters, noting the refreshing challenge of portraying a villainous role. Meanwhile, Zegler addressed the film’s modern updates and defended its departure from the original narrative tropes, emphasizing the need for a contemporary retelling that goes beyond traditional fairy tale expectations.

On October 27, 2023, Disney unveiled the official first image of the film, showcasing Zegler as Snow White alongside the beloved dwarfs—Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, and Sneezy. Zegler also revealed the significant presence of CGI in the film, expressing both excitement and nervousness about the digital elements contributing to the cinematic experience.

Release

During the 2022 D23 Expo Presentation, it was revealed that Snow White would hit theaters in 2024. Subsequently, on September 15, 2022, the film was slated for release on March 22, 2024. However, in October 2023, Disney announced a one-year delay, pushing the release date to March 21, 2025, attributing the shift to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Industry insiders speculated that Disney’s concern over the film’s potential box office performance, compounded by its hefty $330 million budget, prompted the decision to postpone. To mitigate risks and ensure success, Disney plans to conduct reshoots now that the SAG-AFTRA strike has concluded.

Reimagining of the Seven Dwarfs

In January 2022, actor Peter Dinklage, known for his portrayal of characters with dwarfism, criticized the upcoming live-action Snow White remake during an interview on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, labeling it a “backward story.” Dinklage’s remarks sparked a response from Disney, who emphasized their commitment to avoiding stereotypes and consulting with the dwarfism community to reshape the portrayal of the Seven Dwarfs in the film.

Fast forward to July 2023, footage from the Berkshire production site unveiled a significant departure from the traditional depiction of the Seven Dwarfs. Instead of featuring a cast of actors with dwarfism, the characters were reimagined with only one actor of short stature, accompanied by six other performers of diverse ethnic backgrounds and varying heights. Disney initially denied the authenticity of these images but later confirmed their connection to the film, attributing the decision to criticism of political correctness and concerns about limiting opportunities for actors with dwarfism.

In a subsequent development on October 27, 2023, Disney released a first-look image showcasing Snow White, played by Zegler, alongside CGI-rendered versions of the Seven Dwarfs resembling their animated counterparts from the 1937 film. This unveiling, coupled with the film’s postponement, reinforced Disney’s commitment to the project and its reimagined portrayal of the iconic characters.
