Development
In 1990, Tim Burton enlisted Jonathan Gems to craft a sequel to the beloved Beetlejuice (1988) film, titled Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian. Gems described Burton’s vision as a whimsical blend of a beach movie setting with the surrealism of German Expressionism. The storyline followed the Deetz family relocating to Hawaii, where they stumble upon a supernatural dilemma involving an ancient Hawaiian Kahuna’s burial ground. Despite initial plans with Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder on board, the project was postponed due to Burton’s commitment to Batman Returns (1992).
Burton’s interest in Beetlejuice persisted into the early ’90s, leading him to approach Daniel Waters for a rewrite, although Waters ultimately joined the Batman Returns team. Over the years, several writers, including Pamela Norris and Kevin Smith, were involved in attempts to revive the sequel. However, by 2019, Warner Bros. announced that the sequel had been shelved, despite earlier efforts by Seth Grahame-Smith, who aimed to create a sequel worthy of the original’s legacy. Despite the setbacks, the enduring enthusiasm of the cast and fans alike keeps the possibility of a Beetlejuice sequel alive, even if it remains a distant prospect for now.
Pre-production
In February 2022, news of a sequel surfaced once again, this time backed by Brad Pitt’s studio, Plan B Entertainment, in collaboration with Warner Bros. Initially, director Tim Burton expressed his disengagement from the project in October 2022. However, he swiftly reversed his stance, emphasizing that “nothing is out of the question.” Ultimately, Burton returned to helm the sequel, aiming to distill the narrative down to its essence by focusing on the core elements of working with talented actors and puppets. Both Burton and actor Michael Keaton, who portrays the titular character, pledged to minimize the use of excessive technology, opting instead for a more “handmade” feel.
In March 2023, reports from Variety hinted at Jenna Ortega’s potential involvement in the project, with discussions revolving around her portrayal of Astrid Deetz, Lydia’s daughter. Burton, initially slated only to produce, was now expected to direct. Subsequently, in May, composer Danny Elfman confirmed his return to craft the film’s score, alongside the revelation of Ortega’s confirmed role. Additionally, Wednesday creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar took charge of scripting duties. The ensemble cast expanded to include Justin Theroux, Burn Gorman, Arthur Conti, and Willem Dafoe, with Dafoe’s character described as an afterlife officer, a former B movie action star turned detective in the afterworld.
Adding to the excitement, Catherine O’Hara reprised her role as Delia Deetz, while Monica Bellucci joined the cast as Betelgeuse’s wife. Colleen Atwood, a longstanding collaborator with Burton, was tapped for costume design, revealing insights into the iconic striped suit of Betelgeuse, a character synonymous with Tim Burton’s aesthetic. Despite differing opinions on Betelgeuse’s attire between Keaton and Atwood, the return of this signature element promises to evoke nostalgia while further immersing audiences in Burton’s whimsical world.
Filming
Originally slated to commence in mid-2022, filming for the project encountered several delays. Eventually, it was rescheduled to begin on May 10, 2023, in London, contingent upon the resolution of the 2023 WGA strike. Production officially kicked off the following day, with acclaimed cinematographer Haris Zambarloukos and seasoned editor Jay Prychidny on board. Reports surfaced on May 18, 2023, indicating that filming was underway near the Princess Helena College in Preston, Hertfordshire, England.
In a nod to the original movie, exterior scenes were captured in East Corinth, Vermont, during the summer of 2023. However, filming was temporarily halted in July due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Tim Burton, the director, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, revealing that it was nearly complete despite being interrupted by the strike. With just two days of production remaining, filming resumed on November 16, 2023, in Melrose, Massachusetts, before concluding in Vermont on November 30, 2023.
Release
Warner Bros. Pictures has slated the theatrical release of the film for September 6, 2024. The title of the movie was unveiled in February 2024, reaffirming its anticipated release date.
