Big Sky Credit Union

Big Sky Credit Union (BSCU) was established in Australia by individuals who were either current or former employees, contractors, or service providers of prominent entities such as BHP, BP, and the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria, along with their affiliated or divested companies. In 2012, Big Sky Credit Union joined forces with Australian Unity and was amalgamated with Australian Unity’s subsidiary, Lifeplan Australia Building Society. Subsequently, the resulting entity was renamed Big Sky Building Society. In 2016, Big Sky’s operations, services, and website seamlessly integrated into the Australian Unity framework. By 2018, Big Sky Building Society underwent yet another transformation, evolving into Australian Unity Bank.

This organization had its roots in the BHP Employee’s Credit Co-operative, originating in the 1970s. As part of a broader consolidation effort within the Australian Credit Union industry, the merger between Big Sky and BP Credit Unions occurred on September 1, 2003. Effectively, this merger led to the absorption of BP Credit Union’s operations by the management team of Big Sky.

History

The organization’s origins trace back to the BHP Employee’s Credit Co-operative, which emerged in the 1970s. In a significant move within the Australian Credit Union industry aimed at consolidation, Big Sky and BP Credit Unions joined forces on September 1, 2003. This merger resulted in the effective transfer of BP Credit Union’s operations to the capable management of Big Sky.

In the fiscal year 2006, the RACV Credit Union underwent a transition, transferring its entire business to Big Sky. This included all 2,364 members, ultimately leading to the closure of RACV Credit Union. This engagement transfer notably bolstered Big Sky’s assets by $12.1 million and increased member equity by $1.6 million.

By April 2011, Co-operatives Australia recognized the significance of Big Sky Credit Union, ranking it as the 69th largest cooperative in Australia with a substantial revenue of $17.2 million.

A pivotal moment occurred in 2012 when Big Sky merged with Australian Unity, marking the evolution of Big Sky into the banking arm of Australian Unity. The ownership of Big Sky Credit Union Limited was officially transferred to Australian Unity Limited’s subsidiary, Lifeplan Australia Building Society Limited, which was subsequently renamed Big Sky Building Society Limited. As a result of this transformation, the members of Big Sky Credit Union seamlessly transitioned into the fold of Australian Unity, forging a new chapter in their cooperative journey.

Services

Big Sky was part of the rediATM network, a consortium aimed at offering a convenient solution for accessing a wide network of ATMs without incurring the direct charges implemented by the Reserve Bank of Australia in March 2019. This strategic affiliation allowed Big Sky members to enjoy the benefit of utilizing ATMs within the rediATM network, ensuring that they could access their funds without the burden of additional fees.

The Reserve Bank of Australia’s introduction of direct charges in March 2019 brought about significant changes in the landscape of ATM usage. These charges, which often left customers with an unwelcome financial burden, underscored the importance of finding alternative solutions to maintain accessible and cost-effective ATM services.

By joining the rediATM network, Big Sky demonstrated its commitment to its members by providing a practical solution to this issue. The network’s extensive coverage of ATMs across Australia ensured that Big Sky members had convenient access to their funds without incurring the direct charges introduced by the Reserve Bank. In a time when ATM fees were becoming a growing concern for consumers, the partnership with the rediATM network was a testament to Big Sky’s customer-centric approach. It was a strategic move that not only alleviated financial burdens for its members but also underscored the organization’s commitment to delivering a seamless and cost-efficient banking experience.
