Early Life and Career Beginnings

Brian To’o’s journey began in the vibrant and multicultural region of Mount Druitt, New South Wales, Australia. Of Samoan descent, To’o’s heritage plays a significant role in his identity and is a source of immense pride. His Chinese ancestry adds another layer of diversity to his background, making him a unique figure in the rugby league community. Brian To’o was born in Sydney, Australia, to parents of Samoan descent, and he also has Chinese ancestry. He grew up in the Sydney suburb of Mount Druitt and attended Rooty Hill High School. He played his junior rugby league for St Marys Saints.

Career

To’o made his NRL debut in round 10 of the 2019 season for Penrith against the New Zealand Warriors. He scored his first try in round 14 against South Sydney in a 19–18 victory. Throughout the 2019 season, he made 15 appearances and scored a total of 4 tries, with Penrith finishing tenth on the table.

2020 - 2021

In round 8 of the 2020 season, To’o sustained a grade-three syndesmosis injury, sidelining him for two months. He played 16 games that season, scoring 8 tries. Penrith won the Minor Premiership and reached the NRL Grand Final, where To’o scored a try in their 26–20 loss to Melbourne. To’o had a standout year in 2021. In round 4, he scored two tries against Manly-Warringah. Selected for the New South Wales team for the State of Origin series, To’o scored two tries in the opening game, contributing to a 50–6 victory over Queensland. Despite a mid-season injury, he made a strong return, scoring a hat-trick in round 25 against Parramatta. He was named Dally M Winger of the Year and played a pivotal role in Penrith’s Grand Final win over South Sydney, scoring 15 tries in 21 games.

2022 -2023

To’o missed several matches early in the 2022 season due to a knee injury but made a successful return in round 9. He continued to perform at a high level, scoring multiple tries throughout the season. He was again selected for New South Wales in the State of Origin series and played a crucial role in Penrith’s Grand Final victory over Parramatta, scoring two tries. He also represented Samoa in the 2021 Rugby League World Cup, where he scored in the final against Australia and was named in the Team of the Tournament. In 2023, To’o continued to shine, scoring multiple tries in key matches. He was selected for New South Wales in the State of Origin series. He made 23 appearances and scored 21 tries, contributing to Penrith’s third consecutive premiership with a victory over Brisbane in the Grand Final.

 

2024

In the 2024 World Club Challenge final, To’o played for Penrith in their loss to Wigan. He expressed frustration over a controversial try awarded to Wigan. In round 3 of the NRL season, he scored two tries in a grand final rematch against Brisbane. He was selected for New South Wales in the 2024 State of Origin series and continued to demonstrate his scoring prowess, including a hat-trick in round 14 against Manly and two tries in game two of the State of Origin series.

One of the most memorable moments in Brian To’o’s career came in October 2021. Amid the celebrations of the Panthers’ grand final victory at Suncorp Stadium, To’o proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Moesha Crichton-Ropati. In December 2022, To’o and Crichton-Ropati tied the knot, marking another significant milestone in his personal life. The couple is now expecting their first child, a boy, due in late October 2023.
