Development

Following the resounding success of “Inside Out” (2015), which emerged as the seventh-highest-grossing film of the year, speculations about a sequel became widespread. Entertainment Tonight and The Guardian both deemed it “inevitable”. Director Pete Docter began mulling over ideas for a sequel even as the original film garnered nominations at the 88th Academy Awards in January 2016. Pixar officially confirmed the sequel’s development during the D23 Expo announcement in September 2022, with Amy Poehler taking the stage alongside Docter to discuss the film. Kelsey Mann was named as the director for the sequel, marking his feature directorial debut after previously directing the short film “Party Central” in 2013. Mark Nielsen was announced as the producer, and Meg LeFauve was set to write the screenplay, returning from her work on the predecessor. Mann drew on Docter’s concept of “five to 27 emotions” from the first film to craft a “truthful” worldbuilding approach for the sequel.

Casting

Inside Out 2 – Poehler agreed to a $5 million deal with lucrative bonuses to return as Joy. However, a pay dispute led Mindy Kaling and Bill Hader to decline reprising their roles as Disgust and Fear, respectively. Reportedly offered $100,000 each, equivalent to two percent of Poehler’s salary, they opted out. As a result, Tony Hale and Liza Lapira were announced as their replacements for Fear and Disgust in the teaser trailer released on November 9, 2023. Additionally, Maya Hawke joined the cast as Anxiety, introducing a new emotion. Later, on January 16, 2024, June Squibb’s involvement in the film was confirmed, although her role remained undisclosed.

The unveiling of the second trailer and poster on March 7, 2024, brought another revelation: Andrea Datzman had taken over composing duties for the film’s score, succeeding Michael Giacchino. This shift added another layer of anticipation to the movie’s release, as fans speculated on how Datzman’s musical style might influence the emotional resonance of the story.
