Early Life and Career Beginnings

Jarome Luai was born on January 16, 1997, in Sydney, Australia. Of Samoan descent, Luai grew up in the rugby league heartland of Mt Druitt, New South Wales. From a young age, it was evident that he possessed a natural flair for the game. His passion for rugby league was nurtured through his involvement with local clubs, where he honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of the sport.

He has a rich cultural heritage, with Māori (Tainui) and Samoan roots through his paternal grandparents, who hail from Palauli in Samoa. Growing up, Luai played junior rugby league for the St Marys Saints, showcasing his talent early on. His impressive skills on the field caught the attention of the Penrith Panthers, leading to his signing with the club.

Playing Career

Jarome Luai began his journey with the Penrith Panthers in the National Youth Competition (NYC) between 2015 and 2017. During this time, he scored 13 tries and kicked 43 goals. In 2017, Luai also played for Penrith in the New South Wales Cup and captained the Junior Kiwis, scoring a try in their 46–22 loss to the Junior Kangaroos.

Early Career (2017-2018)

Luai made a significant leap in his career when he was included in the Samoan squad for the 2017 World Cup, despite having no prior NRL experience. He debuted against Tonga on November 4, 2017.

Luai made his NRL debut in round 10 of the 2018 season against the Newcastle Knights, coming off the interchange bench. His standout performance came in round 17, where he started at halfback and led Penrith to a 36–4 victory, scoring two tries and providing multiple try assists.

2020 - 2021

In the 2020 NRL season, Lomax played 20 games, scored 13 tries, and kicked 63 goals, totaling 178 points. He was named in the New South Wales State of Origin preliminary squad.

Lomax played 12 matches in the 2021 NRL season, scoring four tries and kicking 35 goals. The St. George Illawarra Dragons finished 11th on the table and missed the finals for the third consecutive year.

2019 - 2020

In the 2019 season, Luai played 13 games for Penrith as the team finished 10th on the table. He also represented Samoa, playing as a hooker in their 24-6 win over PNG and as a halfback in their 44-18 loss to Fiji.

The 2020 season was a breakout year for Luai. He played 23 games, scored seven tries, and made 23 try assists, helping Penrith claim the Minor Premiership and reach the grand final, where they narrowly lost to the Melbourne Storm. His impressive form earned him a spot in the New South Wales State of Origin squad.

2021 - 2022

Luai’s performance in 2021 was stellar. He was selected for the NSW Blues in the State of Origin series and debuted in game 1, contributing to a 50-6 victory over Queensland. Although he missed game three due to a knee injury, he played a crucial role in Penrith’s grand final win over South Sydney. He played 25 games that season.

In round 11 of the 2022 season, Luai scored two tries in a 32–12 victory over the Sydney Roosters. He played all three State of Origin games, although NSW lost the series 2-1. Despite some controversial incidents, including mocking opponents and using an offensive term on social media, Luai helped Penrith secure another premiership with a 28–12 win over Parramatta in the grand final. He was also part of the Samoa squad for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup, playing in every match, including the final against Australia.

2023 - 2024

Luai played in Penrith’s upset loss to St Helens RFC in the 2023 World Club Challenge. He was selected for the NSW Blues in the State of Origin series but was sent off in game two for alleged fighting, leading to NSW losing the series. Despite being dropped for game three, Luai continued to perform well for Penrith, contributing to their third consecutive premiership with a 26-24 victory over Brisbane in the grand final.

On January 3, Luai announced he had signed a five-year deal with the Wests Tigers, starting in 2025. He was selected for the NSW Blues for the 2024 State of Origin series.
