He also embodied Erik, famously known as the Phantom, in the 1998 horror adaptation of “The Phantom of the Opera.” Additionally, Julian Sands portrayed Laurence Olivier in BBC Four’s “In Praise of Hardcore” (2005), a drama centered around critic Kenneth Tynan.

Personal life

Julian Richard Morley Sands entered the world in Otley, West Riding of Yorkshire, England, on January 4, 1958. His academic journey led him to Lord Wandsworth College in Hampshire and later to the Central School of Speech and Drama.

In 1984, Julian Sands tied the knot with Sarah Harvey, a British journalist and author. However, their union dissolved in 1987, leaving them with one son. Moving forward, on September 22, 1990, Julian Sands found marital bliss again, this time with Evgenia Citkowitz, an American playwright, author, and journalist. Their introduction came courtesy of John Malkovich, a close friend of Sands. Evgenia is the daughter of Polish-American composer Israel Citkowitz and Lady Caroline Blackwood. Their union bore two daughters. Julian Sands cherished his family dearly, keeping them shielded from the spotlight and seldom discussing them in public. The Julian Sands family made their home in Los Angeles, California, from 1990 until Julian’s passing.

Vanishing and Passing

Julian Sands, a passionate mountaineer, set out for a hike on Mount San Antonio, California, in the San Gabriel Mountains on 13 January 2023. Later that evening, he was reported missing, initiating a search effort that was initially hindered by severe storms. Julian Sands ‘ car was located on 18 January, and the following day, his three adult children joined the ground search. His son Henry, accompanied by an experienced climber, retraced his father’s expected route. Julian Sands ‘ mobile phone was last tracked on 15 January, indicating its battery had died.

At the time of his disappearance, Julian Sands was believed to be on the Baldy Bowl Trail, a challenging route that ascends 3,900 feet over 4.5 miles. Reports indicated evidence of avalanches in the area, complicating search efforts. Despite the challenging conditions, the Sands family praised the search teams for their dedicated efforts.

On 25 January, Nick Sands, one of Julian’s brothers, acknowledged the likelihood of his brother’s passing, stating, “I have come to terms with the fact he’s gone and for me that’s how I’ve dealt with it.” Henry Sands expressed realism about the impact of weather conditions on the search and looked forward to continuing the search as weather conditions improved.

Five months after Julian Sands went missing, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department reported that over 80 search-and-rescue members had conducted multiple missions, totaling over 500 volunteer search hours. Despite these efforts, on 24 June, hikers discovered human remains in the area where Julian Sands was last seen. The remains were positively identified as Julian Sands on 27 June. The cause of death was listed as “undetermined” due to the condition of the body.
