Promotion

Development

During the production of “Madras” in 2014, Pa. Ranjith initially pitched a script to Vikram, with plans for a collaboration on a future film. However, due to various reasons, the project was put on hold. It wasn’t until September 2021 that reports surfaced indicating a revival of the project, with K. E. Gnanavel Raja’s Studio Green set to produce the film. Initially, Anirudh Ravichander was slated to compose the music, but later, it was announced that G. V. Prakash Kumar would take on that role. The official announcement of the project, tentatively titled “Chiyaan 61,” came on December 2nd, courtesy of Studio Green. Although Rashmika Mandanna was initially cast as the female lead, scheduling conflicts led to her replacement by Malavika Mohanan, who underwent training in Silambam for her role. In May 2022, Ranjith revealed that the film would be set against the backdrop of the Kolar Gold Fields in Karnataka, depicting a historical drama centered around working-class miners who stumble upon gold in the 19th century. Finally, on October 23, coinciding with Ayudha Puja, the title “Thangalaan” was officially announced alongside a teaser.

Film Production Timeline

Principal photography for the film commenced in October 2022, beginning with a short schedule in Chennai to capture some initial scenes. The production later shifted to Kadapa, followed by Madurai, where a pivotal action sequence featuring Malavika and Vikram was filmed. In December, the team relocated to Hogenakkal Falls for further shooting. Additionally, a shoot took place in the Maldives during the same month to capture picturesque scenes. The second schedule of shooting occurred in a film city in Chennai in January 2023, with Malavika joining the cast in February. Following the conclusion of the second schedule in February, the team embarked on the third schedule in Kolar Gold Fields, spanning close to six weeks. Notably, English actor Daniel Caltagirone commenced shooting for his portions during this phase. The final schedule commenced in April, with filming taking place in Madurai and Chennai. However, production faced a temporary halt in May due to a rib injury sustained by Vikram on set. Despite this setback, filming resumed in June, ultimately concluding on 4 July.

Music /Song's

The musical composition and background score for the film are crafted by G. V. Prakash Kumar, marking his inaugural collaboration with Ranjith and his third partnership with Vikram, following their work together on “Deiva Thirumagal” (2011) and “Thaandavam” (2012). The rights to the film’s audio were secured by Times Music for ₹5 crore (US$630,000). Notably, the track “Thangalaan Exclusive Making Theme,” featured in a behind-the-scenes video released on Vikram’s birthday (April 17, 2023), was made available separately on April 19th, 2023. The track is an instrumental piece with a duration of 1 minute and 46 seconds.

Release Date

Originally slated for theatrical release on January 26, 2024, to coincide with Republic Day, “Thangalaan” underwent a schedule change in mid-December 2023. Makers opted to delay the release to prioritize showcasing the film in prestigious film festivals before its worldwide release. A poster dropped on January 15, 2024, on the auspicious occasion of Pongal, revealing a tentative plan for an April 2024 release.

Netflix secured the digital streaming rights for “Thangalaan” for a whopping ₹35 crore, ensuring that the film will reach a wide audience through their platform.
