Walter Blevins (Kentucky politician)

Walter “Doc” Blevins Jr., born on March 29, 1950, is an American politician hailing from Kentucky. He served as the Judge/Executive of Rowan County, held positions in the Kentucky Senate, and also served in the Kentucky House of Representatives. Blevins entered the political arena by winning a significant victory over the incumbent Democratic representative, Woody May, to secure his first term in the House in 1981. Following the resignation of May in 1992, Blevins won a special election to fill the vacant Senate seat.

In 2014, Blevins assumed the role of Judge/Executive after the retirement of Jim Nickell. His transition prompted his resignation from the Senate, with his seat taken over by Republican Steve West. Blevins opted not to pursue reelection in 2018, marking the conclusion of his tenure in public office.

Career

Walter Blevins, a prominent figure in Kentucky politics, served as the Judge/Executive of Rowan County from January 5, 2015, to December 31, 2018. His tenure was marked by a commitment to public service and governance. Prior to his role as Judge/Executive, Blevins had a long and distinguished career in the Kentucky legislature. He represented the 27th district in the Kentucky Senate for over two decades, from January 9, 1992, until January 4, 2015, succeeding Woody May. Before his tenure in the Senate, he served as a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives from the 71st district from January 1, 1982, to January 9, 1992, succeeding Woody May once again. A native of Paintsville, Kentucky, Blevins earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Morehead State University and a Doctor of Dental Medicine from the University of Kentucky. Throughout his career, Blevins remained dedicated to his Democratic principles and to serving the people of Kentucky with integrity and diligence.
