Early & Personal Life

Born on August 1, 1979, in Honolulu, Hawaii, Jason Momoa is an only child. His parents are Coni Lemke, a photographer, and Joseph Momoa, a painter. His father hails from Native Hawaiian heritage, while his mother has German, Irish, and Pawnee ancestry. Following his parents’ divorce shortly after his birth, Momoa and his mother relocated to Norwalk, Iowa, where he spent his formative years. He completed his education at Norwalk High School, where he was a member of the soccer team, alongside Brandon Routh. Subsequently, he pursued higher education at the University of Hawaii.

Momoa’s romantic history includes a six-year relationship with actress Simmone Jade Mackinnon, whom he met on the set of “Baywatch” in 1999. They became engaged in 2004 but eventually ended their engagement in 2005 when Momoa began a relationship with actress Lisa Bonet. While it was previously believed that Momoa and Bonet had tied the knot on November 15, 2007, they officially married in October 2017. Together, they have two children: daughter Lola Iolani, born in July 2007, and son Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha, born in December 2008. However, in January 2022, Momoa and Bonet announced their separation.

To prepare for his role as Ronon in “Stargate Atlantis,” Momoa undertook martial arts training. In 2017, he also delved into Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Momoa is an avid enthusiast of heavy metal music, often drawing inspiration for his characters from metal songs. He even featured members of Archspire in the first episode of the TV series “See” and received guidance from Archspire’s vocalist, Oli Peters, to master proper screaming technique for a pivotal scene in the series. Additionally, on October 30, 2020, Momoa made a guest appearance in the song “Doom” by the black metal band Scour. As a hobby musician, he plays several instruments, including bass guitar, mandolin, ukulele, and guitar. His journey into music began after being moved by Tool’s song “Sober.”

Jason Momoa boasts a collection of tattoos, including a half-sleeve adorning his left forearm as a tribute to his family god, known as “aumakua.”

Beyond his artistic pursuits, Momoa actively participated in protests against the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope on Mauna Kea, a sacred and spiritually significant site for native Hawaiians.

Facial Scars

On November 15, 2008, Jason Momoa endured a harrowing incident when he was assaulted at the Birds Cafe, a tavern located in Hollywood, California. During the altercation, he was viciously slashed across the face with a broken beer glass, resulting in severe injuries. To rectify the damage, he underwent reconstructive surgery, which required the insertion of approximately 140 stitches. The enduring mark of this traumatic event is a prominent scar that runs through his left eyebrow, which remains visible in his later performances.

Justice was served when the assailant responsible for the attack was subsequently sentenced to a five-year prison term for his actions.

Active Career

At the age of 19, while residing and working in Honolulu, Jason Momoa took a pivotal step by auditioning for a role in the television series “Baywatch Hawaii.” This audacious move led to his casting as Jason Ioane, a role he portrayed from 1999 to 2001.

His career continued to gain momentum with appearances in notable productions such as “Johnson Family Vacation” (2004) and “Stargate: Atlantis” (2005–2009). Momoa also assumed the character Roman in four episodes of the comedy-drama television series “The Game” (2009).

In a significant career milestone, he assumed the titular role in “Conan the Barbarian” (2011), a modern interpretation of the 1982 film, famously associated with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

One of his most remarkable achievements came through his audition for the role of Khal Drogo in HBO’s epic fantasy series “Game of Thrones” (2011–2012). During the audition, he performed a Haka, a powerful Māori dance traditionally employed to issue challenges or extend greetings to visitors.

Jason Momoa ventured into filmmaking by directing and co-writing the American drama thriller film “Road to Paloma” (2014). The film featured an ensemble cast, including Momoa himself, Sarah Shahi, Lisa Bonet, Michael Raymond-James, and Wes Studi. It premiered at the 2014 Sarasota Film Festival in April and had a limited theatrical release in New York City and Los Angeles on July 15, 2014, alongside a VOD release.

He continued to diversify his roles, starring in various films such as “Wolves” (2014), “Debug” (2014), and “The Bad Batch” (2015), where he portrayed a cannibal in a drama thriller.

In 2016, Momoa assumed the character of Declan Harp in all three seasons of the Canadian historical drama series “Frontier.” He not only acted in the series but also served as an executive producer. The show delved into the North American fur trade in late 1700s Canada and followed Declan Harp, a part-Irish, part-Cree outlaw challenging the corruption and illegal activities of the Hudson’s Bay Company.

His association with the entertainment industry continued to flourish with his involvement in the post-apocalyptic drama series “See” (2018) for Apple and his casting as Duncan Idaho in Denis Villeneuve’s film adaptation of “Dune” (2019).

In February 2020, he made appearances in a halftime commercial for Rocket Mortgage during Super Bowl LIV and featured in the teaser for “Scary Little Green Men” by Ozzy Osbourne from the album “Ordinary Man.”

Further enhancing his filmography, in January 2022, Momoa joined the cast of the tenth installment of the Fast & Furious franchise, titled “Fast X,” portraying the main villain, Dante Reyes.

As of April 2022, he is set to star in the film adaptation of “Minecraft,” with Jared Hess directing, adding another exciting project to his ever-expanding list of achievements.
