Career

Jessica Capshaw early career included a minor role in the drama “The Locusts” (1997), where she appeared alongside her mother at the age of 19. She then featured in Adam Rifkin’s independent film “Denial” (1998). Capshaw portrayed Dorothy Wheeler in the slasher film “Valentine” (2001) and had a minor role in “Minority Report” (2002), followed by a lead role in Edward Burns’s “The Groomsmen” (2006).

In 2009, Capshaw joined the cast of the medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” in a recurring role as pediatric surgeon Arizona Robbins. Initially set for a multi-episode arc in the fifth season, her contract was extended to encompass the entirety of the season, and she became a series regular starting from the sixth season.

Personal life

In 2005, Stiles completed her studies at Columbia University, earning a degree in English literature. During her college years, she dated actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, with whom she resided in John Jay Hall. From 2011 to 2015, she was romantically involved with actor David Harbour. Recognizing her professional accomplishments, she was honored with a John Jay Award by the Columbia College Alumni Association in 2010.

Beyond her acting career, Stiles has been actively involved in philanthropy, contributing her efforts to organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, where she participated in building housing in Costa Rica. She has also collaborated with Amnesty International to shed light on the challenging circumstances faced by unaccompanied juvenile immigrants. Her advocacy work led her to visit and report on conditions at the Berks County Youth Center in Leesport, Pennsylvania, as featured in Marie Claire in January 2004. Stiles, formerly a vegan, now occasionally incorporates red meat into her diet after experiencing challenges with anemia and nutritional deficiencies while traveling. Expressing her commitment to feminist ideals, she has shared her perspectives on the subject in publications like The Guardian.

A passionate supporter of baseball and the New York Mets, Stiles had the honor of throwing the ceremonial first pitch before their game on May 29, 2006. In September 2017, Stiles tied the knot with camera assistant Preston J. Cook, whom she collaborated with on “Blackway.” Together, they are proud parents to two sons, with their third child born in late 2023.
