Career

Stiles embarked on her film career with a role in “I Love You, I Love You Not” (1996), sharing the screen with Claire Danes and Jude Law. She followed up with minor roles in “The Devil’s Own” (1997) alongside Harrison Ford and in M. Night Shyamalan’s “Wide Awake” (1998). Her breakthrough came with her first lead role in “Wicked” (1998), where she portrayed a teenage girl entangled in a dark familial web. Critic Joe Baltake hailed her as the standout of the 1998 Sundance Film Festival.

In the same year, Stiles captivated audiences as Kat Stratford in “10 Things I Hate About You,” opposite Heath Ledger. This high school adaptation of “The Taming of the Shrew” earned her an MTV Movie Award for Breakthrough Female Performance and accolades from the Chicago Film Critics. She continued her trajectory with “Down to You” (2000) and Shakespearean adaptations like “Hamlet” (2000) and “O” (2001).

Between her appearances in the Bourne series, Stiles featured in “Mona Lisa Smile” (2003) as a forward-thinking student and “The Prince and Me” (2004) as a college student enamored with a Danish prince. Despite some critical scrutiny, Stiles showcased her versatility in these roles. In 2005, she returned to the horror genre with “The Omen,” a remake of the classic film. Her role in “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2007) marked her involvement in one of her highest-grossing films. Stiles continued to diversify her portfolio, starring in projects like “Between Us” (2011), “It’s a Disaster” (2012), and “Closed Circuit” (2013). She also ventured into the realm of supernatural thrillers with “Out of the Dark” (2013), filmed in Bogotá, Colombia.

Stage

Stiles initially found her footing on stage with author/composer John Moran’s works alongside the Ridge Theater group in Manhattan’s Lower East Side from 1993 to 1998. In July to August 2002, she graced the stage in Eve Ensler’s powerful piece, “The Vagina Monologues,” and took on the lead role of Viola in Shakespeare in the Park’s rendition of “Twelfth Night” alongside Jimmy Smits.

Her London stage debut came in 2004, opposite Aaron Eckhart, in a revival of David Mamet’s “Oleanna” at the Garrick Theatre. She later revisited the role of Carol in a 2009 production of “Oleanna,” directed by Doug Hughes and featuring Bill Pullman, initially at the Mark Taper Forum and later on Broadway’s John Golden Theatre.

Scheduled to portray Jeannie in Neil LaBute’s “Fat Pig” under the playwright’s direction from April 2011, Stiles faced disappointment when the production was indefinitely postponed.

Other work

In 1993, Stiles graced the screen in Cyndi Lauper’s music video for the single “Sally’s Pigeons.” Her presence on the small screen expanded when she hosted Saturday Night Live on March 17, 2001, followed by a presentation at the 73rd Academy Awards eight days later. Returning to Saturday Night Live on May 5, she portrayed Jenna Bush, daughter of then-President George W. Bush, in a comedic sketch lampooning the first daughters’ run-in with the law for underage drinking. MTV featured her in its Diary series in 2003, and she became a target for Ashton Kutcher’s pranks on Punk’d during a visit to a Washington, D.C., museum in 2004.

In June 2012, the web series Blue debuted, showcasing Stiles as a single mother navigating a complex life balancing office work and secret employment as a call girl to support her family. Her performance earned her two IAWTV Awards in 2013 and 2014. Collaborating with artists like Michelle Forbes, JC Gonzalez, and Uriah Shelton, Stiles delivered a compelling portrayal. Her latest venture includes the role of Maisy-May in the Canadian Amazon Prime series The Lake, announced in 2021. Maisy-May, the “picture-perfect” stepdaughter/stepsister, inherits the family cottage from her stepfather, much to the chagrin of her stepbrother Justin. Filmed in North Bay, Ontario, in August and September 2021, the first season premiered on June 17, 2022.

Personal life

In 2005, Stiles completed her studies at Columbia University, earning a degree in English literature. During her college years, she dated actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, with whom she resided in John Jay Hall. From 2011 to 2015, she was romantically involved with actor David Harbour. Recognizing her professional accomplishments, she was honored with a John Jay Award by the Columbia College Alumni Association in 2010.

Beyond her acting career, Stiles has been actively involved in philanthropy, contributing her efforts to organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, where she participated in building housing in Costa Rica. She has also collaborated with Amnesty International to shed light on the challenging circumstances faced by unaccompanied juvenile immigrants. Her advocacy work led her to visit and report on conditions at the Berks County Youth Center in Leesport, Pennsylvania, as featured in Marie Claire in January 2004. Stiles, formerly a vegan, now occasionally incorporates red meat into her diet after experiencing challenges with anemia and nutritional deficiencies while traveling. Expressing her commitment to feminist ideals, she has shared her perspectives on the subject in publications like The Guardian.

A passionate supporter of baseball and the New York Mets, Stiles had the honor of throwing the ceremonial first pitch before their game on May 29, 2006. In September 2017, Stiles tied the knot with camera assistant Preston J. Cook, whom she collaborated with on “Blackway.” Together, they are proud parents to two sons, with their third child born in late 2023.
