Development
In late 2020, there were speculations about a potential collaboration between Shah Rukh Khan and Rajkumar Hirani. By August 2021, the scriptwriting process had been successfully completed. The production company officially unveiled the project to the public on April 19, 2022, through a witty announcement video.
Hirani, in partnership with Abhijat Joshi and Kanika Dhillon, co-authored the film’s script. During the course of production, there were creative differences between Hirani and cinematographer Amit Roy, leading to Roy’s departure from the project. C. K. Muraleedharan, who had previously collaborated with Hirani on films like “3 Idiots,” “Lage Raho Munna Bhai,” and “PK,” was chosen as the replacement cinematographer.
Mukesh Chhabra was entrusted with the casting responsibilities, and the talented ensemble cast began to take shape. Taapsee Pannu was confirmed as the female lead alongside Khan, and later, acclaimed actors Vicky Kaushal, Boman Irani, Dia Mirza, and Satish Shah also joined the cast.
Filming
The principal photography phase commenced in September 2021, with Shah Rukh Khan’s portion of the filming starting in Mumbai in April 2022. Following this, the production team embarked on international shoots in Budapest and London in July 2022, successfully concluding the filming process in August. In October, Khan undertook the challenge of shooting a grand-scale bike sequence involving 500 individuals in Mumbai.
The next scheduled shoot, spanning 12 days, took place in November and was located in Saudi Arabia, particularly in the innovative city of Neom. This marked a historic achievement as the film became the first Bollywood production to be shot in Neom. Additionally, an underwater sequence was filmed in Mumbai as part of the project.
In April 2023, the team journeyed to Kashmir for a four-day scheduled shoot in picturesque locales like Sonamarg and Pulwama, adding to the film’s diverse and captivating settings.
Release
The film is set for release on December 22, 2023, aligning with the festive season of Christmas. This release date does coincide with the release of “Salaar.” While there were rumors circulating that it might be postponed to 2024, Shah Rukh Khan officially confirmed during the success press event for “Jawan” that the film will indeed release on the originally announced date. It’s anticipated that the film’s teaser will be attached to “Tiger 3.”
For the overseas market, the film is scheduled to hit theaters on December 21, 2023, a day prior to its release in India.
Distribution in North India will be handled by Pen Marudhar Entertainment, while Yash Raj Films will oversee distribution in the overseas market, including North America.
The non-theatrical rights for the film fetched an impressive sum of around ₹230 crores. Furthermore, JioCinema secured the post-release streaming rights for ₹155 crores, setting a new benchmark as one of the highest-ever deals for streaming rights for a single-language Indian film.
