History

Mastung has a historical legacy dating back to the 10th century, as documented by geographers such as al-Muqaddasi and Istakhri. They both included Mastung in their records as one of the towns within the province of Bālis, alternatively known as Bālish or Wālishtān, with its capital located in Sibi.

The historical account continues in the late 1500s with the Ain-i-Akbari, a document from the reign of the Mughal emperor Akbar. According to this record, Mastung was listed among the 24 mahals (subdivisions) encompassed within the Sarkar (administrative division) of Kandahar. During this period, Mastung was fortified by a mud brick fort and generated an annual revenue of 10 tumans and 8,000 dinars in cash, in addition to 470 kharwars of grain. Its population was characterized by a blend of Afghans and Balochs, reflecting the diverse heritage of the region.

Regrettably, Mastung’s recent history has been marred by tragic events. The 2017 Mastung suicide bombing resulted in the loss of 28 lives and injuries to 40 individuals. Subsequently, in 2018, another devastating suicide bombing claimed the lives of 149 people and left 186 injured. Sadly, Mastung experienced yet another act of violence in 2023, underscoring the resilience of its community in the face of adversity.

In summary, Mastung’s historical roots extend back to ancient times, with its significance documented by various geographers and historical records. The town’s diverse population and economic activities have shaped its identity over the centuries, while recent events emphasize the need for peace and stability in the region.
